Food, Herbs, & Soul Food
Growing up in N.Y.C., I had minimal connection to food and nature, although I had a deep desire to connect to them. I will be the first to raise my hand and say I had no idea that carrots grew in the ground!
By the age of 16, I was a vegetarian. However, I still did not fully understand what healthy eating was until I was pregnant and raising my daughter. I craved fruits and vegetables, things I would never eat before. When she was ready to eat solid foods, I made all her baby food from scratch in a mini food processor.
I met a mother of three a few years later, and we dabbled in making natural body products. After several months, we were selling at a local weekly farmer's market and at events. I learned a wealth of information on how to use herbs and oils therapeutically. Eventually, I became certified in Aromatherapy, and Thai Folk Medicine.
Fast forward to today, I am a Integrative Nutrition Coach, Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist, and have cooked vegetarian foods in professional kitchens. As I travel the world, I make a point to learn about local foods and have taken cooking classes worldwide, including at Le Cordon Bleu. I have worked at and managed a health food store with an endless stream of educational opportunities on supplements, herbs, food, homeopathy, flower essences, and more for almost a dozen years. I grow my own food organically, and teach cooking classes based on the yogic diet.
Food is for many the place where we gather around a table with others. We travel through food. We go on grand flavor adventures. It is comforting and challenging, nourishing and healing.
What we don't always realize is how food is so integral to our mental and spiritual well-being. What and how we eat effects our planet, our neighbors, and all those who inhabit the earth. A sattvic, balanced, ahimsa diet, is essential to the yogic lifestyle. Cooking healthy food for you, your family, and friends, is an expression of love.
